Spiritual Significance
Annada Ekadashi falls on the 11th day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada month and is especially associated with abundance of food (anna) and removal of poverty. According to the Brahma Vaivarta Purana, this fast liberates even ancestors trapped in lower realms. Donating food (anna daan) on this day is considered the highest form of charity.
How to Celebrate in Australia
Observing Annada Ekadashi in Australia is highly auspicious. Because local timezone sunrise and moonrise times differ, follow these practices:
- Align Fasting with Local Sunrise: Start your vrat precisely at sunrise in Sydney (approx 06:00 local time), rather than following Indian Standard Time.
- Perform Puja during local Auspicious Hours: Make sure to perform the main rituals during local AEST evening/night windows as shown above.
- Ekadashi vrat from sunrise to next day sunrise
- Worshipping Lord Vishnu with Tulsi and yellow flowers
- Feeding Brahmins and the poor (Anna Daan)
- Reciting Annada Ekadashi Katha
- Offering cooked rice to Lord Vishnu
