Spiritual Significance
Chaitra Navratri begins on the first day of the Hindu New Year (Pratipada of Chaitra Shukla Paksha) and runs for nine days of devotional fasting and worship of the nine forms of Goddess Durga. It is the spring Navratri coinciding with the onset of warmer weather and marks a time for spiritual renewal and devotion. The festival culminates on Ram Navami, the birth anniversary of Lord Rama.
How to Celebrate in United States
Observing Chaitra Navratri Begins in United States is highly auspicious. Because local timezone sunrise and moonrise times differ, follow these practices:
- Align Fasting with Local Sunrise: Start your vrat precisely at sunrise in New York (approx 06:00 local time), rather than following Indian Standard Time.
- Perform Puja during local Auspicious Hours: Make sure to perform the main rituals during local EST evening/night windows as shown above.
- Ghatasthapana with Saptashati parayana
- Daily worship of a different form of Durga
- Recitation of Durga Saptashati (700 verses)
- Kanya Puja on Ashtami or Navami
- Maintaining a 9-day fast
