Spiritual Significance
Diwali 2026 is the most celebrated festival in India, a five-day extravaganza of lights, fireworks, sweets, and prayers to Goddess Lakshmi. The festival marks Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and celebrates the victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. Every home, temple, and street is illuminated with millions of diyas.
How to Celebrate in United States
Observing Diwali (Deepavali) in United States is highly auspicious. Because local timezone sunrise and moonrise times differ, follow these practices:
- Align Fasting with Local Sunrise: Start your vrat precisely at sunrise in New York (approx 18:30 local time), rather than following Indian Standard Time.
- Perform Puja during local Auspicious Hours: Make sure to perform the main rituals during local EST evening/night windows as shown above.
- Lakshmi Puja during Pradosh Kaal with diyas and flowers
- Lighting oil lamps along pathways and windows
- Setting off fireworks and sparklers at night
- Exchanging gifts and sweets with family and friends
- Cleaning and decorating home to welcome Goddess Lakshmi
