Spiritual Significance
Durga Puja 2026 (Maha Shashthi to Vijayadashami) is the most significant festival of Bengal and Eastern India, celebrating Goddess Durga's triumph over the buffalo demon Mahishasura after a fierce nine-day battle. Elaborate pandals (temporary structures) are constructed across cities with stunning artistic themes, housing beautifully crafted clay idols of the Goddess and her children — Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha, and Kartikeya. The festival is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
How to Celebrate in United Arab Emirates
Observing Durga Puja in United Arab Emirates is highly auspicious. Because local timezone sunrise and moonrise times differ, follow these practices:
- Align Fasting with Local Sunrise: Start your vrat precisely at sunrise in Dubai (approx 06:00 local time), rather than following Indian Standard Time.
- Perform Puja during local Auspicious Hours: Make sure to perform the main rituals during local GST evening/night windows as shown above.
- Maha Shashthi — Bodhon (awakening) of the Goddess and Kalparambha (beginning of rituals)
- Maha Saptami — Navapatrika (nine plants) bath in the river at dawn
- Maha Ashtami — Kumari Puja (worship of young girl as Goddess), Sandhi Puja at the junction of Ashtami-Navami
- Maha Navami — final worship and Maha Aarti
- Vijayadashami — Sindoor Khela (married women apply sindoor to each other), Durga Visarjan (immersion of idol in river)
