Spiritual Significance
Dussehra or Vijayadashami commemorates Lord Rama's victory over the demon king Ravana, symbolizing the ultimate triumph of righteousness (dharma) over evil. It also marks the day Goddess Durga slew the demon Mahishasura, after waging a nine-day battle. Celebrated on the 10th day of Ashwin's bright fortnight, it is one of the most important festivals in the Hindu calendar.
How to Celebrate in United States
Observing Dussehra (Vijayadashami) in United States is highly auspicious. Because local timezone sunrise and moonrise times differ, follow these practices:
- Align Fasting with Local Sunrise: Start your vrat precisely at sunrise in New York (approx 06:00 local time), rather than following Indian Standard Time.
- Perform Puja during local Auspicious Hours: Make sure to perform the main rituals during local EST evening/night windows as shown above.
- Burning of effigies of Ravana, Meghnad, and Kumbhkarna
- Ram Leela performances in North India
- Shami Puja and exchange of Shami leaves as gold
- Procession of Goddess Durga idol to rivers for visarjan
- Worship of arms and tools (Ayudha Puja) in South India
