Spiritual Significance
Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed deity of wisdom, prosperity, and new beginnings. Celebrated with greatest fervor in Maharashtra, this 10-day festival sees massive clay idols of Ganesha installed in homes and public pandals, followed by visarjan (immersion) on Anant Chaturdashi. The festival was popularized as a social event by Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak during India's independence movement.
How to Celebrate in United States
Observing Ganesh Chaturthi in United States is highly auspicious. Because local timezone sunrise and moonrise times differ, follow these practices:
- Align Fasting with Local Sunrise: Start your vrat precisely at sunrise in New York (approx 06:00 local time), rather than following Indian Standard Time.
- Perform Puja during local Auspicious Hours: Make sure to perform the main rituals during local EST evening/night windows as shown above.
- Installation of Ganesha idol (Ganesh Sthapana)
- Daily puja with 21 Durva grass blades and 21 modaks
- Recitation of Ganesh Atharvashirsha
- Aarti twice daily with 'Sukhkarta Dukhharta'
- Immersion of idol on 1.5th, 3rd, 5th, 7th, or 10th day
