Guru Purnima 2026 is dedicated to honoring spiritual and academic teachers. Celebrated on the full moon day of Ashadha, it marks the birthday of Maharishi Veda Vyasa — the sage who compiled the four Vedas, authored the Mahabharata and all 18 Puranas, and is considered the greatest guru in Hindu tradition. Hence it is also called Vyasa Purnima. Buddhists celebrate this day as the occasion when Buddha delivered his first sermon at Sarnath (Deer Park). In Jainism, it marks the day Lord Mahavira made Indrabhuti Gautam his first disciple.
