Spiritual Significance

Hartalika Teej 2026 is considered the most important of all Teej festivals and falls on the third day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada month. The word 'Hartalika' means 'one who was abducted by a friend' — referring to the legend where Goddess Parvati's friend took her away (haran) to the forest to prevent her from marrying Vishnu, so she could perform penance and marry Lord Shiva. It is one of the strictest fasts observed by married women (nirjala — without water) for their husband's long life, and by unmarried girls for an ideal husband.
