Spiritual Significance
Kartik Purnima 2026, also celebrated as Dev Diwali (Diwali of the Gods), is the full moon day of the holy month of Kartik. It is believed that on this night, all 33 crore gods descend to the ghats of Varanasi to bathe in the Ganges and celebrate their own Diwali. The ghats of Varanasi are illuminated with millions of diyas creating a breathtaking spectacle. This day also marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak (Gurpurab) and is sacred to Jains and Sikhs as well. A holy dip in the Ganges on this day is considered equivalent to performing Ashwamedha Yagna.
How to Celebrate in Singapore
Observing Kartik Purnima (Dev Diwali) in Singapore is highly auspicious. Because local timezone sunrise and moonrise times differ, follow these practices:
- Align Fasting with Local Sunrise: Start your vrat precisely at sunrise in Singapore (approx 06:00 local time), rather than following Indian Standard Time.
- Perform Puja during local Auspicious Hours: Make sure to perform the main rituals during local SGT evening/night windows as shown above.
- Holy dip in the Ganges at dawn (especially at Varanasi)
- Lighting lakhs of diyas on the ghats of Varanasi (Dev Deepawali)
- Performing Satyanarayan Katha and Vishnu Puja
- Deep Daan (donating earthen lamps to the river)
- Chanting Kartik Mahatmya and visiting temples
