Spiritual Significance
Onam 2026 is the biggest and most important festival of Kerala, celebrated for 10 days during the Malayalam month of Chingam. It commemorates the annual homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali — a just and beloved Asura king whose rule was so perfect that even the gods grew jealous. Lord Vishnu, in his Vamana (dwarf) avatar, pushed Mahabali to the netherworld (Patala) but granted him the boon of visiting his people once a year. Keralites welcome their king with spectacular pookalam (flower rangoli), Onasadya (grand feast on banana leaf with 26+ dishes), Vallam Kali (snake boat races), Pulikali (tiger dance), and Kaikottikali (clap dance).
