Spiritual Significance
Onam 2027 is Kerala's grandest festival — a 10-day celebration during the Malayalam month of Chingam commemorating the return of the mythical King Mahabali. Vishnu, in his Vamana avatar, pushed the beloved king to the netherworld but granted him the boon of visiting his people once a year. Keralites welcome their king with spectacular flower carpets (Pookalam), the legendary Onasadya feast, snake boat races (Vallam Kali), tiger dances (Pulikali), and traditional performances.
How to Celebrate in United States
Observing Onam (Thiruvonam) in United States is highly auspicious. Because local timezone sunrise and moonrise times differ, follow these practices:
- Align Fasting with Local Sunrise: Start your vrat precisely at sunrise in New York (approx 06:00 local time), rather than following Indian Standard Time.
- Perform Puja during local Auspicious Hours: Make sure to perform the main rituals during local EST evening/night windows as shown above.
- Creating elaborate Pookalam (flower carpets) for 10 days
- Preparing Onasadya — a grand feast of 26+ dishes on banana leaf
- Watching Vallam Kali (snake boat races) on the rivers
- Pulikali — tiger dance with body-painted performers
- Kathakali and traditional music and dance performances
