Spiritual Significance
Pitru Paksha is a 16-day lunar period in the Hindu calendar dedicated to performing rituals (Shradh) for deceased ancestors. According to Hindu belief, during this period, the souls of ancestors descend to earth and blessings given to them in the form of Tarpan (water and sesame oblations) ensure their peace and the prosperity of the living family. It is considered inauspicious to start new ventures during this period.
How to Celebrate in Australia
Observing Pitru Paksha Begins in Australia is highly auspicious. Because local timezone sunrise and moonrise times differ, follow these practices:
- Align Fasting with Local Sunrise: Start your vrat precisely at sunrise in Sydney (approx 06:00 local time), rather than following Indian Standard Time.
- Perform Puja during local Auspicious Hours: Make sure to perform the main rituals during local AEST evening/night windows as shown above.
- Tarpan (offering water mixed with sesame seeds) to ancestors
- Shradh puja on the tithi corresponding to ancestor's death date
- Pind Daan (offering of cooked rice balls) at sacred rivers
- Feeding Brahmins and cows as proxy for ancestors
- Donating clothes, food, and essentials on behalf of departed
