Pongal is a four-day Tamil harvest festival coinciding with Makar Sankranti and one of the most important festivals of Tamil Nadu. The word 'Pongal' means 'to boil or overflow', symbolizing abundance. The centerpiece is the ritual of boiling fresh rice with newly harvested jaggery and milk in a clay pot outdoors until it overflows โ an auspicious sign of plenty. The four days honor the Sun, cattle, and family.
