Spiritual Significance
Sheetala Ashtami is observed eight days after Holi and is dedicated to Goddess Sheetala Mata (also called Sheetala Devi), the goddess who cures and protects from poxes, sores, fevers, and skin diseases. The unique feature of this festival is that no fire is lit in the kitchen — only cold, pre-cooked food (basoda/basi) is consumed. The festival holds deep public health significance, historically promoting hygiene during the transition from winter to summer.
How to Celebrate in United Arab Emirates
Observing Sheetala Ashtami in United Arab Emirates is highly auspicious. Because local timezone sunrise and moonrise times differ, follow these practices:
- Align Fasting with Local Sunrise: Start your vrat precisely at sunrise in Dubai (approx 06:00 local time), rather than following Indian Standard Time.
- Perform Puja during local Auspicious Hours: Make sure to perform the main rituals during local GST evening/night windows as shown above.
- Worshipping Goddess Sheetala with cold offerings
- Eating only cold, pre-cooked food (Basoda) all day
- Not lighting any fire or stove in the home
- Visiting Sheetala Mata temples and offering water and grains
- Praying for protection from diseases, especially for children
