Spiritual Significance
Ugadi marks the beginning of the new year according to the Hindu lunisolar calendar followed in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka. The name derives from 'Yuga' (era) + 'Adi' (beginning). The Pachadi โ a special chutney made of six tastes โ symbolizes the varied experiences of life: joy, sorrow, surprise, disgust, fear, and anger. It is believed Lord Brahma created the universe on this day.
How to Celebrate in United States
Observing Ugadi in United States is highly auspicious. Because local timezone sunrise and moonrise times differ, follow these practices:
- Align Fasting with Local Sunrise: Start your vrat precisely at sunrise in New York (approx 06:00 local time), rather than following Indian Standard Time.
- Perform Puja during local Auspicious Hours: Make sure to perform the main rituals during local EST evening/night windows as shown above.
- Oil bath followed by new clothes in the morning
- Decorating home entrance with fresh mango leaves (Torana)
- Preparing and eating Ugadi Pachadi (six-taste chutney)
- Listening to the Panchangasravanam (reading of new year almanac)
- Visiting temples and receiving blessings for the new year
