Utpanna Ekadashi commemorates the emergence of the goddess Ekadashi from Lord Vishnu's body to slay the demon Mura. According to the Bhavisyottara Purana, Lord Vishnu granted her the boon that those who observe Ekadashi fasts would attain liberation. This Ekadashi, the first of its kind, falls on the dark fortnight of Margashirsha and is the origin point of all Ekadashi vrats.
