According to legend, Yamuna (the river goddess) welcomed her brother Yama (the Lord of Death) with a tilak, flowers, and a feast on this day, and Yama was so moved that he declared any brother who receives a tilak from his sister on this day would never fear death. Sisters apply tilak on their brother's forehead and pray for their long life.
