How a Wedding Muhurat Is Actually Chosen
A wedding date is not chosen by looking for a lucky day. It is chosen by elimination: the panchang of each candidate date is checked against the conditions classical texts set for vivah, and a date is discarded the moment any one of them fails. A date that survives all of them is a muhurat.
This generator applies those conditions to every day in your range and shows its working. Kept dates list the reasons they qualified; rejected dates list the condition that ruled them out. Nothing is hidden behind a score, and nothing is guessed — the tithi, nakshatra, Panchak and Bhadra values come from an ephemeris, not from a template.
The Five Conditions
Nakshatra: the Moon must occupy one of the nakshatras prescribed for vivah — Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada or Revati. These are the nakshatras whose deities and qualities the texts associate with stable married life.
Tithi: the rikta tithis (the 4th, 9th and 14th of each fortnight), Purnima and Amavasya are avoided. Weekday: Tuesday and Saturday are traditionally excluded, though practice varies by region. Panchak: while the Moon travels from the second half of Dhanishta to the end of Revati, auspicious beginnings are avoided. Bhadra: the Vishti karana, an inauspicious half-tithi that recurs through the lunar month, disqualifies a date if it is running at the time of the ceremony.
Why the Generator Also Shows Rejections
Because the useful question is rarely "is this date good?" but "why not this date?". Families usually have a month in mind — a holiday, a harvest, a break in a work calendar — and need to know whether that month contains any qualifying window at all, and if not, precisely which condition is closing it.
You will also notice the pattern the rules create: qualifying dates cluster in the months outside Chaturmas, which is why a January range returns a dozen candidates while a July range can return none. That is the calendar working as intended, not a gap in the data.
What This Tool Does Not Decide
It decides the date, not the marriage. A muhurat that suits the calendar can still be wrong for the couple, because the classical method also weighs both charts: the dashas running for each partner, the 7th house and its lord, and the transit of Jupiter and Saturn over the natal Moon. Two couples can share a perfect muhurat date and have entirely different prospects on it.
So use the shortlist here as the input to a chart-based reading, not as its replacement. Match the charts first, confirm the lagna and the exact hour from the panchang of the chosen day, and treat the ranking of these dates as provisional until an astrologer has seen both horoscopes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does this wedding muhurat generator work?
It evaluates every day in your selected range against the classical vivah conditions — prescribed nakshatra, acceptable tithi, accepted weekday, no Panchak and no Bhadra — using real ephemeris values for the tithi, nakshatra and karana at local sunrise, and shows the reason for each kept and rejected date.
Which nakshatras are good for a wedding?
Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati are the nakshatras classically prescribed for vivah.
Why is my date rejected?
Open the rejected list and the specific condition is named: an unsupported nakshatra, a rikta tithi, Purnima or Amavasya, a Tuesday or Saturday, Panchak running, or Bhadra (Vishti karana). Each is a separate classical rule, and any one of them disqualifies the date.
Are the dates calculated or copied from a table?
Calculated. The Moon's sidereal nakshatra, the tithi and the karana are computed from an ephemeris for every day at local sunrise, which is the same convention a printed panchang uses. Two panchangs can differ by a day when a nakshatra ends close to sunrise.
Does a muhurat date guarantee a good marriage?
No. The muhurat fixes the timing of the ceremony; the compatibility of the couple comes from the matching and from both charts. A sound date on an unsound match is still an unsound match.
