The Divine Essence of Bhai Dooj
Bhai Dooj, also known as Bhau Beej, Bhai Tika, or Yama Dwitiya, is a beautiful Hindu festival that celebrates the eternal bond between brothers and sisters. Falling on the second lunar day of Shukla Paksha in the Kartik month (two days after Diwali), it marks the grand finale of the five-day Diwali festivities. Unlike Raksha Bandhan where brothers promise to protect sisters, on Bhai Dooj, sisters pray for their brothers' long life, health, and prosperity, shielding them from negative energies.
The Legend of Yama Dwitiya: Yama and Yamuna
The name Yama Dwitiya comes from a sacred Vedic legend. According to scriptures, Goddess Yamuna (the river goddess) repeatedly invited her brother Lord Yama (the God of Death) to visit her home. Busy with his duties in the underworld, Yama kept postponing. Finally, on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya, he surprised Yamuna by visiting her house. Overjoyed, Yamuna welcomed him with a grand feast, applied a protective Tilak on his forehead, and prayed for his wellbeing.
Deeply touched, Lord Yama granted her a boon. Yamuna requested: "Any brother who receives a Tilak from his sister on this day, and bathes in the holy Yamuna river, should be spared from the fear of untimely death and the torments of the underworld." Lord Yama happily granted this, establishing the custom of Bhai Dooj.

Step-by-Step Tilak Ritual Guide
Sisters can easily perform the Bhai Dooj Puja at home by following this traditional layout:
- Prepare the Puja Thali: Arrange vermilion (kumkum), unbroken rice grains (akshat), a ghee lamp, sweets, coconut (gola), and sacred grass (durva) on a decorative plate.
- Seat the Brother: Make the brother sit on a wooden stool (chowki) facing the North or East direction. Never seat him facing South.
- Apply the Tilak: Apply a vermilion Tilak on the brother's forehead, pressing a few rice grains on top. This symbolises the opening of the third eye (spiritual protection).
- Offer Sacred Items: Place the coconut (gola) and durva grass in the brother's hands. Tie a sacred red thread (kalava) on his wrist.
- Perform Aarti: Light the ghee lamp and wave it in circular motions before the brother, praying silently for his health.
- Sweeten and Feed: Feed the brother his favorite sweet. The brother then presents gifts or blessings to his sister as a token of appreciation.
If possible, brothers and sisters should try to bathe in the Yamuna or any sacred river in the morning before the Tilak ceremony to capture the maximum spiritual merits of Yama Dwitiya.
