Pitru Paksha 2026: Start & End Dates, Shraddh Rituals
Pitru Paksha is the fortnight of the ancestors. It is believed that during these 16 days, the souls of our forefathers come down from Pitru Loka to reside in their descendants' homes. Offering them water (Tarpan) and food (Pind Daan) is the highest duty of a son/daughter.
In 2026, Pitru Paksha is observed from September 26 to October 11.
Shraddh Calendar 2026
Perform the Shraddh on the Tithi of your ancestor's death. If the Tithi is unknown, perform it on Sarva Pitru Amavasya.
How to Perform Tarpan at Home?
If you cannot go to Gaya or Haridwar, you can perform a simple Tarpan at home:
- Wake up during Brahma Muhurta and take a bath.
- Wear white clothes (Men should wear a Dhoti).
- Face South (the direction of Yama).
- Take water, black sesame seeds (til), and kush grass in your palms.
- Offer the water through the space between your thumb and index finger (Pitru Tirth) while chanting your ancestors' names/Gotra.
Forbidden Activities
- Do not buy new clothes or vehicles.
- Do not cut hair or nails.
- Do not eat non-vegetarian food, garlic, or onions.
- Avoid marriage or auspicious celebrations.
Significance of Crows
It is said that ancestors accept food in the form of crows. Feeding crows, cows, and dogs is an essential part of the Shraddh ritual.
Conclusion
Pitru Paksha is not a time of fear, but of gratitude. By honoring those who gave us life, we clear our karmic debts and receive their blessings for health and prosperity.
