The 10 Poruthams Explained
Thirumana Porutham checks ten layers of compatibility between the couple's birth nakshatras. Here is what each porutham examines and how it is scored.
📅 Dina Porutham
Counts the nakshatras from the bride's star to the groom's star. Certain counts (2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11, 13, 15, 18, 20, 24, 26) are considered auspicious and believed to support longevity and the daily harmony of married life.
🌗 Gana Porutham
Compares the nature of the stars: Deva (divine), Manusha (human) and Rakshasa (demonic). Deva–Deva and Manusha–Manusha are good; Deva–Manusha is acceptable; combinations with Rakshasa are traditionally considered incompatible.
🐅 Yoni Porutham
Compares the animal symbols of the nakshatras (horse, elephant, serpent, cat, rat, tiger, cow and more). Same or friendly animals indicate strong physical and emotional compatibility; classical enemy pairs (cat–rat, dog–deer, serpent–mongoose, tiger–cow and similar) are flagged.
♈ Rasi Porutham
Checks the moon-sign (rasi) positions. Counts of 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 12 from one rasi to the other — including the same rasi — are considered good; the remaining positions are less favourable.
👑 Rasiyathipathi Porutham
Compares the planetary lords of the two moon signs. If the lords are friends, the match gains strength; neutral lords are acceptable; enemy lords are traditionally considered unfavourable.
🫱🏻🫲🏼 Vasya Porutham
Checks mutual control between the rashis — whether one sign naturally dominates or harmonises with the other. Mutual control is believed to ease everyday influence and decision-making between the couple.
🧵 Rajju Porutham
Groups the 27 nakshatras into three bands (Adi, Madhya, Antya). If both partners fall in the same band, Rajju dosha is traditionally flagged — one of the most discussed porutham doshas, with known exceptions and remedies.
🚧 Vedha Porutham
Flags specific classical obstruction pairs among the nakshatras (for example Ashwini–Jyeshtha, Rohini–Swati, Krittika–Vishakha). A Vedha pair is traditionally considered an obstruction to the marriage.
🏛️ Varna Porutham
Compares the traditional varna of the rashis (Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaisya, Sudra). Same varna is traditionally considered good; different varna is considered less favourable in the classical system.
💧 Nadi Porutham
Compares the birth humour groups (Adi, Madhya, Antya nadi). Same nadi produces Nadi dosha, traditionally associated with health and offspring concerns. It is the best-known porutham dosha and has classical exceptions.
Simplified classical references; traditional practitioners apply regional exceptions. Always confirm with a qualified astrologer.
