The Significance of Tithi in Vedic Astrology
In Hindu astrology and time-keeping (Panchang), a Tithi is the foundational unit of the lunar day. While the Western calendar tracks solar days based on the rotation of the Earth relative to the Sun, the Vedic Panchang is a lunisolar system that tracks the relative positions of both the Sun and the Moon.
Each Hindu month represents one complete cycle of the Moon (from new moon to new moon, or full moon to full moon), spanning 360 degrees of orbit. This orbital cycle is divided into 30 distinct Tithis, with each Tithi representing a 12-degree increase in the separation angle between the Moon and the Sun. Because the Moon accelerates and decelerates in its elliptical path, the time it takes to travel through 12 degrees changes constantly. Thus, unlike solar days which are fixed at 24 hours, a Tithi can last anywhere from 19 to 26 hours.
The Two Fortnights: Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha
The 30 Tithis of a lunar month are split into two fortnights, or Pakshas, consisting of 15 Tithis each:
- Shukla Paksha (The Bright Fortnight): Represents the waxing phase of the Moon, starting from the day after the New Moon (Amavasya) and culminating in the Full Moon (Purnima). The Moon is gaining light, representing growth, clarity, and rising cosmic energy.
- Krishna Paksha (The Dark Fortnight): Represents the waning phase of the Moon, starting from the day after the Full Moon (Purnima) and ending at the New Moon (Amavasya). The Moon is losing light, representing introspection, spiritual release, and receding outward energies.
Under general Muhurat rules, Shukla Paksha Tithis are highly favored for positive, constructive beginnings (like setting up a new business, laying foundation stones, or marriages). In contrast, Krishna Paksha Tithis (especially the latter half) are better suited for completion, clearing debts, or spiritual meditations.
Classification of Tithis: The Five Auspicious Groups
To determine which Tithis are suitable for particular types of human actions, the 15 Tithis of each Paksha are classified into five functional groups based on their planetary rulers and energetic structures:
- Nanda (Pratipada, Shashthi, Ekadashi): Meaning 'delightful' or 'joyous'. Ruled by Venus, these lunar days are highly favorable for starting artistic ventures, weddings, entering a new house, wearing new garments, and seeking pleasures.
- Bhadra (Dwitiya, Saptami, Dwadashi): Meaning 'wise' or 'salutary'. Ruled by Mercury, these days are excellent for starting intellectual tasks, signing business agreements, educational matters, buying vehicles, and travel.
- Jaya (Tritiya, Ashtami, Trayodashi): Meaning 'victorious'. Ruled by Mars, these Tithis support overcoming hurdles, competitive sports, launching campaigns, litigation support, and mechanical works.
- Rikta (Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi): Meaning 'empty' or 'void'. Ruled by Saturn, these days are considered inauspicious for starting any constructive project. Any auspicious task started on a Rikta day fails to bear fruit. However, they are highly potent for spiritual cleansings, house cleaning, executing surgical procedures, and resolving old disputes.
- Poorna (Panchami, Dashami, Purnima/Amavasya): Meaning 'full' or 'complete'. Ruled by Jupiter, these Tithis represent completion and fulfillment. They are universally auspicious for wedding rituals, financial planning, entering new homes, business setups, and major social functions.
The Influence of Birth Tithi (Janma Tithi)
Just as your Moon Sign (Rashi) and Rising Sign (Lagna) shape your outer personality and destiny, the Janma Tithi (the lunar day you were born on) reveals your inner emotional blueprint, core character strengths, and karmic lessons.
For example, those born on a Panchami Tithi are often blessed with the blessings of the Naagas (Snake Lords), indicating deep analytical capability, interest in esoteric sciences, and magnetic attraction. People born on an Ekadashi Tithi are naturally inclined toward spiritual study, fasting, and charity, possessing a clean conscience. Conversely, those born on Rikta Tithis (such as Chaturthi or Chaturdashi) may face unexpected obstacles early in life but develop deep spiritual resilience and mental strength as they mature.
